Halong - a Concentration of Stone Islands
In the bays of Halong and Bai Tu Long, there are nearly 2000 small stone islands. The highest is just over 200m while the lowest about 5-6 m. They rise out of the sea surface, exposing rough vertical cliffs in strange and impressive shapes. Over the years, the local fishermen have named these mountain-islands after their shapes: Lu Huong (Incense Burner), Ga Choi (Fighting Cocks), Dau Nguoi (Human Head), Me Rong Con (Child-carrying Mother), Rua (Tortoise)... Among these islands, some are immediately recognizable from a distance because they closely resemble the real things and are more beautiful than any sculptures. The following islands are the most famous and beautiful.
